The Stress Mess

Improve Time Management Techniques & Reduce Stress

by

Bary Sherman

In US businesses today we see that employees are not only overworked, but are suffering lower productivity due to the massive effects of stress.  They don’t sleep well, or long enough, or allow enough “down-time” to actually recharge their depleted mental batteries.  Simply put, they have poor personal development of time management skills.

According to our 2005 WhiteCollar Productivity Index (WCI) study, business meetings have increased three fold since 2000.  Overtime hours, whatever they actually are, have increased by 200%.

The hours devoted to answering email, not including research and thinking time, have more than doubled from 3.0 to 6.8 hours per week, per person.  This magic tool called email has changed from the “Promise” to the “Plague” within corporate America.

Leaders are often not leading - only managing.  They tell us they don’t have time to lead, and although working hours have increased, white collar productivity appears to have lost ground.

What truly scares us is that leaders are telling us they do not have the time to invest effort in planning work.  They are just being reactive to whatever percolates to the crises point with little opportunity to include proactive thought in their daily time management routines.

Our advice is for today’s worker is to find help to improve their personal development of effective work habits.  Professional athletes go to coaches to improve or correct their skills and techniques. In the same way today’s corporate workers need to find a coach— whether a co-worker, a spouse, a friend, or a professional, or program such as PEP or the ePEP™ Program to help them improve how they do what they do.

Success in today’s 24/7 office world has less to do with technology and more to do with effective personal work habits, improved productivity and effective time management skills .  It’s more about how to “work the system” and not so much about how the system works.
