TIME MANAGEMENT & PRODUCTIVITY TIPS for MOBILE WORK ENVIROMENTS

by

Bary Sherman

Today, we work from wherever we are and, unfortunately, whenever we want.  Our wherever/whenever culture has left many wondering what parts of their personal development need improvement so that they can be productive and effective at their jobs.  The following are seventeen tips which have been most effective for our clients:

  1. Use an electronic calendar to keep track of your activities and appointments
  2. Task in Outlook and To Dos in Note will remind you of anything, anytime
  3. Use the features (modes) of your PIM which fit your work style
  4. Stop using speaker phones in an open environment
  5. Plan, proactively, times and dates to be in the corporate office
  6. Keep regular business hours when working at home
  7. Check-in often, listen & reply often to both voice mail & email when out of the office
  8. Respect the office protocols
  9. Honor “Do Not Disturb” signs & requests
  10. Hotel only in the space assigned
  11. Leave a hoteled work station in clean condition
  12. Invest in a high-quality ergonomic chair for your home office
  13. State your phone number twice when leaving a voice mail - once at the beginning of the message, and again at the end
  14. Back-up the data on your notebook computer at least once a week
  15. Keep paper only for good reason – never just for filing
  16. Learn to use a scanner effectively
  17. Ask questions about electronics – the person sitting next to you probably has the answer or knows where you can get the answer to your technology question
